Worship Pre-fessional February 29, 2008

Filed under: Worship Confessionals — createdtopraise @ 9:55 am

Practice went well last night.  I’m still sick, but was able to sing.  Here’s who we’ve got lined up this week:

Raymond – keyboard/vocals

Bryant – guitar/vocals

Josh – drums

Speedy, Shalyian, Becky  - vocals

The “new guy” was back on the media team last night and I totally got his name wrong last time.  His name is Greg and we’re so happy to have him join us!  Sorry about getting your name wrong last time, Greg.  :)

We covered a lot of ground in music last night.  We really worked out the kinks in a few songs and learned a new one as well.  I’m looking forward to worship on Sunday.  As usual, I’m not going to tell you our set list, but they’re really great worship songs.  I believe the atmosphere of worship will already be in place before the music starts and everyone is going to really worship Sunday morning.  Looking forward to that!

I’m still sick, but doing MUCH better.  The meds are already making a big difference.  The cough medicine has codine in it, though.  It’s keeping me really drowsy, but at least I’m not coughing.  And it’s kind of funny to watch me on any kind of pain meds…even mild ones like codine.  Pain meds make me itch.  Last night I was scratching like I had bugs crawling on me.  I’d make a terrible drug addict.  I wouldn’t be able to hide it.  I’d be scratching all the time.  :)

Saw the Doctor February 27, 2008

I just wanted to give y’all a quick update.  I went to the doctor today and he confirmed my condition.  It is strep throat and sinusitis.  I got a nice shot in the arm that still hurts and a couple of prescriptions.  Rodney is home from work again today taking care of me.  The doctor says that by tomorrow I should see marked improvement.  He then fussed at me for waiting so long to see him.  So you were all right and I was the one who was wrong.  :)

Thank you again for your continued prayers.  Now I’m going to get doped up and sleep.  :)

A Few Projects February 25, 2008

Filed under: Personal Life, Random Stuff — createdtopraise @ 5:17 pm

I get so bored when I’m sick.  So I’ve been sitting in bed scrapbooking.  Here are a few of my projects that I’ve made over the last couple of days.

The first is a little mini book.  I made the chipboard cover.  The other three pages are actually envelopes.  I’ll fill them with our favorite Spring quotes, recipies and fun stuff we love to do during Springtime.

Next is a fun card I made.  I recently found this fun stamp on sale and couldn’t resist it.  Cute, huh?

Finally, a frame I made.  I designed the picket fence using chipboard and patterened paper.  I added lots of pretty embellishments and a photo of me and my girls.  I really like the way this turned out.  It’s hanging in my scraproom now.

Okay, so that’s enough scrapbook stuff for now.  My brain still isn’t functioning well enough for me to write anything profound, so I’ll just stop now.  :)

You’ve Gotta Be Kidding Me February 24, 2008

I’m sick again.  This is getting a bit ridiculous.  I go two solid years without being sick and suddenly I’m sick for two solid weeks.  Last week it was the flu and this week it looks like strep throat.  It feels the same as the flu, only this time my throat hurts too.

I stayed home from church.  If I’m contageous, I don’t want to get anyone else sick.  I hate that I missed the special music, though.  I was really looking forward to it.  I hear that all went well though.

So today I stayed in bed all day, resting.  I eventually got bored, so I started scrapbooking in bed.  I’ll share some of my stuff with y’all once I’m feeling up to scanning it.  Rodney has been super sweet.  He’s been helping with the kids and even brought me soup.

Okay, I’m starting to ramble.  It’s hard keeping my thoughts straight right now.  More when I’m normal again.  :)

Well That’s Just Cool February 22, 2008

Holland Davis, the author of the song “Let it Rise” left a comment on my blog yesterday.  Now that’s just cool.  I almost regret that I didn’t say more about the song in my post.  lol  So in case you come back, Holland, I’d like to tell you a little more about how that song has affected our team.

Last night at practice, we were just having a jam session.  We want to get better at what we already do well.  So last night, almost everyone on the team asked if we could do that song.  :)   It’s true!  I’m not making it up.  lol  We do a rockin’ arrangement, much like Big Daddy Weave does.  As musicians, it’s tons of fun to play.  As vocalists, it’s perfect for fun harmonies.  As worshipers, it’s the cry of our hearts.  Our goal as a worship team is to enter into worship, magnify the Lord and bring our congregation into worship with us.  This song is the perfect lead-in for that.

So Holland, thank you!  Thank you for giving us this great song.  It really is a blessing to us!

Worship Pre-fessional February 22, 2008

Filed under: Worship Confessionals — createdtopraise @ 1:31 am

Since we’re not actually leading worship this week, I guess this isn’t really a pre-fessional, but I still want to tell you about our practice tonight.  It was FANTASTIC!

First we had auditions for the ensemble choir.  The weather was horrible (tornado warnings, rain, hail, etc), so the turn-out wasn’t as great as I had expected.  However, those that came made me smile.  They are all passionate about worship and that is exactly what I was hoping for.  For those who couldn’t make it, don’t think your chance has passed.  I understand that weather can keep people home…it was bad tonight.  Come see me Sunday morning and we’ll arrange a time to get together.  Cary even made some cd’s for y’all to learn some of the songs we regularly do.  FUN!

After auditions, we jammed!  We had Raymond on keyboard, Bryant on acoustic & electric guitar, Josh on drums & Zack on bass.  Speedy, Mattie, Shalyian, Jennifer & myself were on vocals.  The Media Team had Kevin, Cary & Mike.  They also had a new guy join us who we’re all looking forward to working with.  His name is Grant (gee, I hope I got that right) and he’s super nice.

The songs we focused on are:

Sing to the King

Revelation Song

Let it Rise

Nothing But the Blood

It was sooooo much fun to relax and just jam.  And we all walked away feeling more confident about the songs.  It was so good, in fact, that we’re going to start doing that once a month.  Woohoo!  We focused a lot on the music tonight and didn’t spend as much time on vocals as I would have liked.  We have time restrictions while we’re in the hotel.  It’s going to be soooo nice once we’re in our permanent building.  No restrictions.  No set up/tear down.  Just jam.

Y’all please take a moment today to pray for Jennifer.  She’s got one more month left in the pregnancy and it’s starting to get hard.  Soon she will step down from the team.  She’ll be back after the baby is born, but we’re going to miss her.  :(   Anyway, if y’all could pray for her during this last month of her pregnancy, I know she would greatly appreciate it.

I’m really excited about what’s happening with our team.  I can see us meshing together better all the time.  The longer we play together, the better we’ll be and it’s fun to watch that happening.  And as more musicians and vocalists join the team, it’s just going to get better and better.  Seeing the way God is working in our team is amazing.  He is blessing us and it’s a joy to be a part of that.

And here’s my final thought for the night…..sing your heart out.  Turn off the computer, the tv, the radio, whatever is distracting you, and sing to the Lord.  Sing to Him about how beautiful He is.  Sing about how you love Him.  Sing about how He loves you.  Don’t worry about how you sound.  Just worship Him.  I guarantee you’ll walk away refreshed and closer to Him.  :)

Now, Isn’t That Better? February 21, 2008

Filed under: Personal Life, Worship Leader — createdtopraise @ 10:51 am

See, I told you I’d come back in a better mood.  :)   I just had to readjust my attitude.  I think it’s the rain.  I’ve heard that the weather can greatly affect our moods, and apparently it’s true.

Something fun is happening tonight.  We’re having auditions for the ensemble choir and for musicians.  These auditions are going to be VERY informal.  So if you would like to sing or play an instrument, come by Country Inn and Suites tonight at 6pm.  Have with you a song that well displays your vocal range or musical ability and be prepared to do a portion of it.  Call or email me if you have any questions.  Or you can just leave a comment here and I’ll get in touch with you. We are also having our LIFE Group before the auditions.  We’d love for you to join us!  5:30 at Country Inn & Suites.

Because we have a group coming in to sing Sunday, the worship team will not be having a regular practice this week.  We are still meeting though.  After the auditions, we’re going to be working on some new music and improving some familiar songs.  I love the times when we can focus on improving our skill rather than just preparing for the next service.  At our regular practices, there’s usually so much to do in prep for the following Sunday that we don’t have time to just improve our skills as musicians.  So tonight is going to be a real treat.

You know, I think I’ll talk about that for a minute.  There are two very important things that we as worship team must combine….worship and skill.  Right now, I’m not going to address the worship aspect of it, but am going to focus only on the skill aspect of being on a worship team.  So don’t think I’m ignoring the worship aspect as it’s of utmost importance.  I juts want to talk about musical skill right now.

The average band (NOT worship team) usually has one set that they do repeatedly.  Every once in a while they’ll change it up and throw something new in, but for the most part they do the same songs every time they hit the stage.  For the band, this makes life much easier.  They work on a single set of songs each time they rehearse.  They work and work and work until they’ve perfected that set of songs.  Then when they get on the stage, they can play the songs with little effort since the songs are permanently embedded in their brains.

Not so with a worship team.  Every single week, a worship team has an entirely new set of songs to work on.  Sure, we may do a lot of the same songs over the course of several months, but for the most part it’s new songs every week.  Some are familiar, some are brand new.  For instance, if we learn a brand new song this week and do it again next week, then we’re pretty familiar with the song.  But then we might not do that song again for another three months.  In that time, we’ve pretty much forgotten the song.  So the next time we do it, it won’t be with as much perfection as if we had done it repeatedly week after week.

Practice makes a huge difference, but it still doesn’t perfect the music.  As musicians, this can be both exciting and frustrating.  Typically, musicians are fast movers.  We like to learn new songs and get bored with the old stuff quickly.  However, we want to play with the best of our skills and perfect our craft.  That’s impossible to do when you’re doing a completely different set each week.  That can get frustrating at times.

There are things we can do to help with this though.  For instance, we can practice throughout the week.  Our lives are just as busy as everyone else’s, but we make time for what’s important to us.  If playing skillfully matters to us, we will ensure that we make time each week to practice.  Also, every once in a while, we can have a rehearsal that has absolutely nothing to do with preparing for a Sunday service.  Rather, it is a time just to work on the songs we already know and to mesh together as a team.  Things like that make a big difference.

And that’s why I’m excited about tonight.  It’s one of those times where the only agenda is to improve our skills as musicians and blend better as a team.  And the best part?  We always end up in worship.  I love that!

Wrong Side of the Bed February 21, 2008

Filed under: Personal Life — createdtopraise @ 8:05 am

Have you ever had one of those days where nothing seems to go right?  I’m having one of those days today already.  I just got up on the wrong side of the bed and everything is getting under my skin.  But you know what?  Attitude is something I can fix.  I don’t have to stay in a funk because it’s my choice what kind of day I’m going to have.  So I’m leaving the house.  The weather is yucky and I don’t care.  I’m getting out of this house and I’m going to come back in a better mood.  Maybe Beau & Jack (my toddlers) will get in a better mood as well…once Mommy adjusts her own attitude.  :)   I’ll come back later all happy and ready to play nice.

Cheering Myself Up February 20, 2008

Filed under: Random Stuff — createdtopraise @ 10:06 am

I just couldn’t stay in a funk yesterday.  I had to do something to cheer myself up.  And since nothing cheers me up like playing with paper, I scrapped a few pages.  Wanna see?

This first one is my Beau riding in his Diego jeep on Christmas day.  The man in the pic with him is our dear friend, Danny.

This next page is Rodney and Jack together.  I took this pic about a year ago.  I just love the way Jack seems so at ease in his Daddy’s arms.  Total trust.

This last one is my FAVORITE!  It’s my Jack, singing his heart out.  The quote really spoke to me yesterday and I hope one day it will speak to him right when he needs it to.  It says, “Some days you won’t have a song in your heart.  Sing anyway.”
